Alkan's etude op.39 no.3 "Scherzo Diabolico" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdXCO9OIBzQIt starts with a speedy fortissimo scherzo theme which is quite difficult to play already,however after the trio the scherzo returns(about 3:20), this time in a deathly whisper. Both mute and sustain pedals must be held down throughout this section, and without keeping the dynamic at a constant ppp , the whole thing will degenerate into a murky haze.the phrases have a wide spread, making them very difficult to control at speed.
