Help me find a piece for my graduation recital !
on: April 22, 2014, 02:18:53 PM
Hi everyone, :)

So at the end of this year I will have my undergraduate senior recital and I need to play a programme of 25-30 minutes.

So far, here's my programme:

Haydn - Haydn Sonata Hob.XVI: 23 in F-major (all movements) ~ 10 mins without repeats
Schumann -  Faschingsschwank Aus Wien, Op. 26, I. Allegro ~ 9-10 mins
Barber - Nocturne Op. 33 ~ 4 mins

So I still need about 5 mins...and I'm wondering if I should choose another piece by another composer or just play more movements from the Schumann...or change my modern piece?

I've asked my teacher...but her answer has always been "It's up to you" (she wants me to be more independent in choosing my own pieces...) so I don't want to annoy her any further...

Thank You everyone  :)

Currently working on:

Bach - P&F in C# Major, BWV 872, Book II
Haydn - Sonata No.60 in C Major, Hob. XVI 50
Mendelssohn - Variations Serieuses
Debussy - Reflets dans l'eau
Ravel - Jeux d'eau

Joseph Marx "Arabesque"

So you're annoying us instead?  ;D

I suspect what your teacher is trying to encourage in you is both the going out and looking at the possibilities (ie, listening to lots of music) and the ability to recognise pieces you identify with, or otherwise find interesting enough to learn /perform.

So, go off to YT and listen around. Come back to us with a list of possibilities that you like and see what gets some love.

Sounds like BS to tell you to find your own piece.  A little direction would be nice.  I remember a professor telling me to check out a certain area of a composer's work, but not just a free for all search. Not that it's bad.  Sure, listen to a lot.  Think on your own.  But then... Why do you need the teacher?

I like the Marx.  I was looking at the list wondering what would contrast with the other stuff.  Familiar and unfamiliar.  Not atonal.  That would keep my interest in a recital for five minutes just because it was new.  I don't remember ever hearing of this composer actually... Interesting.
