Do piano players wear gloves?
on: November 25, 2004, 09:46:56 PM
Hello,
I am a guitarist who and am just starting to learn piano.  I am being taught by my friend, who is very experienced.  I have a little problem however.  I am also a classical guitarist.  I have to pick with my fingernails on my right hand, and therefore they must be grown out long enough to pick with.  My teacher says I must play with the tips of my fingers for proper technique, but I get an annoying clicking sound from my nails.  I was just wondering, is there any gloves that pianists wear?  Some type of glove that wouln't hinder my playing but would help to eliminate or just make less loud the clicking sound would be great.  Thanks for any replies!

Ryan

You're much better off playing with flat fingers than with gloves on.  You really do not need to play with the very tips of your fingers.  It's possible your teacher is advocating a severely curled finger position which is not necessarily the best way to play the piano.  By not playing with the bony tip of your fingers but with the soft fleshy part a few millimeters from the tip you'll avoid the annoying clicking of your nails...unless, of course you have nine inch nails.  Wearing gloves is really not an option...except for a cabaret act. :)  Indeed I read about a singer/pianist named Hildegarde who did just that:  “As a cabaret artist she used various eye-catching gambits - primly playing the piano wearing opera gloves, then saucily calling men from the tables to dance with her.”
"Playing the piano is my greatest joy, next to my wife; it is my most absorbing interest, next to my work." ...Charles Cooke

oops...well no....
Gloves would hinder finger flexibilty and pianistic technique. Pianists only use them to warm up their hands before presentations  :P, and sometimes they even reject them altogether since playing with overly sweaty hands would make them slip from the keys.
The nail problem really is an annoyance and most piano teachers encourage their students to keep short nails as a solution for it.

You cant play piano with true classical guitarist fingernails.  Right now they are clicking on the keys, but if you play over long periods of time, they will break and you will have nails growing out from under your nails.  This is very painful and you cannot play piano well when at this stage.  I also play Guitar, but I keep my fingersnails short for piano practicing purposes.  You have to set some priorities straight..

Some pianists with nail problems put band-aid over their fingertips. You take a strip of band-aid, put one end on the fleshy underside of your fingertip, route it over the very tip of your finger and put the other end on the upper side of your finger over the nail. Maybe that helps.

oh yeah Gattaca!  Thats a great movie.  That was some whizbang arrangement of Schubert's Impromptu Op 90 no 3, huh?  although I truely doubt it takes 12 fingers..

When my piano teacher performed in England, she said she used to take gloves and cut out the fingertips of each finger from about the middle joint forward, because the halls were so cold her hands would cramp. The gloves kept her hands warm and still allowed her direct contact with the keys.

To show that he had 6 fingers on each hand when he threw the glove to Uma Thurman, of course.

No, pianists do not wear gloves.  However, sometimes they sound as if they're wearing gloves... :)
