Their height is different
Since the height is different the sound board is littler in those that are less tall and bigger in those that are more tall

U1 is 130cm, U2 is 140 and U3 is 160cm

daniel is right, although the dimensions are wrong.
the U1 is 120 cm, the U3 is 130 cm and the U2 is somewhere between the two. I think the u3 also has slightly longer keys (on the inside of piano) , possibly giving more control over nuances. The added height of the U3 also gives a better bass.
check yamaha website or google for more info.

im thinking of buying one, secondhand.
you too?
anyone got any tips?

My parents have a U3, no complaints from me. Except that for a 'beginner' such as myself it is easy to play bad on a bright and loud piano. On the other hand, if you're good the sound is massive without letting the individual notes drown in harmony. And I really like the keys (I could imagine Baadshah is right about length of the keys), I find the scale of dynamics very finely controllable. This is my narrowish experience regarding U3 in comparison to other pianos I've tried.
