10-15 Minute Piece
on: May 25, 2014, 05:55:24 PM
I am looking for a 10-15 minute (maximum of 15 preferably a little shorter) of intermediate difficulty - e.g. dipABRSM level or less. I have looked at the pieces listed on the dipABRSM syllabus but there are not many that are long enough.

I am open to any style but I would like something romantic or classical (e.g. Schumann, Chopin etc).

Any suggestions?

Beethoven Op. 49

Or Pathetique

Or Moonlight

Mozart's a major sonata, the one with the variations and the turkish march. Check out some of the Schubert impromptus, they're pretty long too. OH Schubert's A minor sonata (no. 16 I think), Schubert's sonata-fantasie in g major. Though these works are not technical monsters, say like the Liszt etudes they're pretty difficult and require a sh*t ton of concentration. I wouldn't call them intermediate but they're definitely doable if you approach them correctly.

Mate I think the Pathetique is too long for his requirement, it's at least 17.5 minutes even if you don't do the repeat and play at a reasonable pace.

Have you tried Op 14. No.2 in G major? It is very easy (probably the second easiest Beethoven Sonata in the DipABRSM list, after th3 Op. 2 No. 1), and lasts approx 13 minutes. That should fit your time frame well and it is a very playful and beautiful piece may I add :)

Beethoven Op 15, 31/2, 31/3, 57
Mozart K 284, 310
Debussy Images II
Ravel Miroirs
Rachmaninov Op 23 No.5

Very difficult to find such an extended piece at less than early advanced levels since length of the work is a big part of its total relative difficulty.  Would an entire opus is several smaller pieces work? Since a complete opus it makes for effective presentation.

Perhaps something like Nielsen's op 59?  They are super cool

A friend of mine recently did the Beethoven Variations Op. 34 for dipABRSM.  The duration is towards the top end of your requirement.

Chopin Ballade 1
Schumann ABEGG Variations
Debussy Images I (all 3)
Berg Sonata

Brahms ballade no 4, it might be a little advanced though. I'm not sure.
