Brahms Symphony 4
on: May 28, 2014, 01:26:31 PM
I have recently received a free prize from G.Henle Verlag, it appears to my disappointment that it is a full score of Brahms Symphony No.4, I hoped that it was some piano urtext. I am not a disliker of Brahms but don't find his works interesting. I listened to the symphony a while. The 1st movement has a rather interesting opening but it fades away shortly, it fail to rekindle my interest till the end of the movement. The 2nd movement is more likely the same as the 1st, at least for the timing. The 3rd movement has some festive-like opening and some good themes. The last movement is rather dull.  Anyone here who loves this symphony can point out some interesting parts of this symphony? Many thanks.

No doubt one of my favorite symphonies of all time, a masterpiece. The first movement is what you  would call "structurally perfect". The only advice i can give is to listen to it more  and more, it'll eventually grow on you. You'll start to notice all the little things that give musicologists a reason to call him the  true successor of Beethoven, and the Germanic tradition.

It seems to me that this sentence is quite the paradox!

Even if your not a huge fan of the piece (and let it grow on you before you say that), yu can, if your not familiar with orchestral scores, use it as a useful learning tool. Follow along and learn to read various orchestral parts. Brahms was a fine orchestrator, see what he does.

Put it in your toilet in case you run out of paper.

That is all it is good for.

Give yourself time with it, as J. Menz said.  It's an impeccable, supreme work, the orchestration superb.  The architectonice possibly unsurpassed.

Thanks for all your comments! Basically, I prefer music with a simple melody that echoed throughout the whole piece, maybe this is some kind of advanced stuff that need more time to understand.

It's one of my favourite symphonies, and probably one of the best ever written.  If you don't want the score, send to me, please  ;)

But if you keep it, study bit by bit, through time, it will do you good, especially when playing Brahms.
