Bach Invention no.4, trill problem
on: May 31, 2014, 07:35:41 PM
Hi,
I've been practising this invention for about a month and I can play it quite well except the trill sections (bars: 19-21, 29-33).
I can play every hand separately well and can play it hands together in slower tempo, but when I want to play it fast, the trilling hand always starts to slow down.
The trill secrions are the only reason, why I can't perform this piece.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Hello onwan,
I played the Invention, and I can understand you.
One of my teachers saw the same problem, and what he told me is the next:
- Relax your wrists.
- Exercise with separated hands the trills (try using the fingers which are pointed in the piece, or just the index and middle one), start slow and if it sounds smooth, then start to increase the speed.
- Once you can control the speed, play the section where the trill appears changing the tempo, from slow to faster.
- Also start playing the piece at slow pace but with a constant tempo.
- Once you dominate the piece, increase the tempo of the whole piece.
Another tip for these cases is to train all your fingers (from the thumb to the little one) with the trills.
I hope this can help you. Good luck.

How are you trilling, i.e. what are you moving and how are you moving them?
