The Evolutionary Piano Project Launched Today
on: June 17, 2014, 10:26:22 PM
The Evolutionary Piano Project launched on Indiegogo today.

https://www.indiegogo.com/ projects/711360/emal/6624140

The primary goal of the project is to discover the optimum shape and material properties of a piano soundboard using evolutionary computing techniques.  This type of simulation differs from previous efforts in that the shape of the soundboard is not constrained by an existing case or preconceived notions of what a piano soundboard should look like.  The computer is given a design space, a string architecture, and a set of fitness criteria defining a desired acoustic performance, and then searches for the optimum size, shape and material properties to deliver that performance.

The soundboard is to be made primarily of carbon fiber composite, but the fiber type, fiber orientation and the perimeter shape of each layer will be optimized to produce unique material properties at every point on the board.  The reinforcing ribs will be completely eliminated, which is expected to improve the performance in the treble.  A custom grand piano will be built to serve as a test bed for the soundboard.  The piano will also have an expanded compass of 102 keys, which might appeal to piano composers and jazz pianists.

Please go to the website and consider supporting the project.  Thank You.
