Just make sure that the polyrhythm IS 2 individual parts. I hate thinking about polyrhythms as one rhythm against the other. If you're doing 4 over 3, make sure 4 is evenly repeating, then add 3 on top of it. The 3 should be evenly repeating, as well. Maybe make each polyrhythm more applicable as an individual part, by accenting one of the rhythms differently than the other.

I guess where in Chopin, you would fit a number of notes over a straight left hand rhythm, in LISZT you would make sure each hand is steady, playing separate parts in individual rhythms but in the same tempo. IDK if that makes sense at all???

MAINLY, the 4 notes are going to sound as if they progress faster than the 3, and the 3 notes sound as if they are progressing slower, behind the beats. That's another way of thinking about it.

Otherwise, I don't think I understood your question. LOL

Actually, I would practice the polys to a metronome, maybe on your lap, or a table? Get interactive with it. To accomplish free-flowing polyrhythm passages, you have to be loose. To be loose, you have to move your body more. So when you play each rhythm in your hands, on your lap, make sure you lift your hands up enough, and play the other rhythm as a movement against movement. Practice that polyrhythm for multiple beats! make sure each set of 3 and each set of 4 is continuously and evenly flowing, but the parts are independent.

I know I am getting really wacky with my interpretation here, but it helps, I swear.

Then yes, play each parts separately, slowly, making sure you commit to each note, do not slur. Set the metronome, and practice bar by bar, or even beat by beat, don't forget the transitions.

If you need any help just show me the passage and we can work it out together. I don't mind.
