Audition Rep
on: June 22, 2014, 11:55:53 PM
Hi!  :) I have a very important audition next year and I need to diligently prepare a solid repertoire from now. Though, I'm very undecised between Brahms Sonata No.1 and Chopin's Sonata No.2 as my large scale work. I recently gave up on La Valse which I considered too difficult and not worth enough playing. My teacher let me decide between those two sonatas, but I truly don't know which is overall (technically, musically, learning-wise) easier. I know that at this level I'm supposed to decide by my own, but I sight read through both (at least attempted sight reading them) and they both seem of massive proportions. I equally love them- absolutely love the orchestral and massive Brahms Sonata and the romantic Chopin one. I'm looking forward for your advice. Hugs, Martha.  :-*
Currently working on:
Bach prelude and fugue No.20
Beethoven Waldstein
Chopin Polonaise-Fantasie Op.61
Chopin Etude Op.25 No.6
Liszt T.E. No.8
Ravel Piano Concerto

Both are absolutely wonderful pieces. Personally, I would go for Brahms as Chopin is a little too mainstream. I'm sure there are going to be quite a number of candidates who are playing Chopin. You need to give the juries something different and fresh so that they have a lasting impression. This is just my opinion, it's all up to you. Besides that, you'll need to know your weaknesses. When choosing a piece for an audition, choose a piece that can hide your weaknesses well. Or else, your skills would look pale if there's someone who could play Liszt or Rachmaninoff like a boss.
