Blisters on foot, how to prevent or deal with?
on: July 04, 2014, 11:58:55 PM
 ::)

Just curious what ideas people have.

Not getting them at all sounds best.

Is it possible to toughen up to them over time?  This is right on the ball of my foot.  Shoes are fine.  Double socks.  Foot powder.  I could try Vaseline and go the slick route if that would help.

I saw a youtube video, so I'm trying acne cream on them.   ;D ::)  Benzoyl peroxide is supposed to dry them out.  We'll see...

After 3 miles of walking I noticed my fingers puffed up.  Pads on the fingers were filled out.   I'm assuming toes/feet do too.  Lips also I think.  I was drinking water the whole time.  That's about the distance I start feeling like blisters might be forming.

I have always suffered from blisters, hands too and sometimes even on fingertips after doing needle work...my skin just don't harden.

But since they invented these, I'm ok:

(There are other brands)

They are like fake skin and stay for a long time. Even a fully blown blister does not hurt when covered with these :)

Cool, thanks.  I got some of those at the store today.  If I need them, I'm ready.

One blister so far. Yuck.  Unfortunately that and the spots I didn't put sunscreen on are appearing now.

We expect better from our subjects than fair skin and deep pockets. Make haste and patch yourself together lest we lose faith.

There is a vile concoction we discovered in our travels, oil made from palm tree than when applied to wounds as grievous as the ones you described brought relief and dulled the mind thus avoiding pain.

Maybe you shouldnt do the double socks, simple single dry sport socks usually just work fine, and make sure your socks are pulled up properly. And when you walk, take regular breaks. Building up the distances should toughen up your feet, and remind that you often have to get used to new shoes.

Agreed. So drive, or take the bus.

Defeats the point.

I wonder if it's best to push it just to when I'm aware a blister could be forming.  Then back off and let that toughen up.

We're puzzled thought. Shouldn't you as a member of the male sex have tougher feet after all those blisters? When we were just mortal we got then once, then the skin became hard as diamond and we could walk over a hot sandy shore littered with glass without as much as a scratch.

Consider changing the footwear. We favor a new type of boot called sneakers.

I walked 23 miles unscheduled last year since some "friend" gave me a lift into town to handle a break in of my house. then left me here without transportation (bicycle was out in the country).  I didn't get any blisters, and my feet are not that tough.  I have soft skin and do not grow calluses.  I wore a pair of ordinary orlon socks, and hard leather shoes that really fit.  You want the shoe to have a suitable arch under the middle, and be really tight around the middle. This keeps the shoe from sliding back and forth.  A little extra length at the toe is fine, but you want a tight heel that keeps the shoe from sliding side to side.  I have narrow feet and wear special order B width shoes that really fit me.
Genesco Army boots were fine, but since I am not retired from the military, I can't buy them in B width anymore, only D and EE.  These shoes I wore on my trek were hard black leather Johnston and Murphy brand.  Old Florsheim leather shoes were fine in the proper width, but they went bankrupt.  New Balance trainers might be fine in the proper width (they are the only vendor I know that sells trainers in widths with an actual arch).  but at the time I got stranded the pair I had peeling soles.  A real problem with New Balance, the soles don't stick on very well.  I have to special order those too, nobody stocks alternate widths in shoes in this tiny 2 million population town.

How amusing, our soon-to-be-conquered-country is barely 4 million in total.
