Some new repertoire?
on: July 12, 2014, 12:05:49 AM
So, am I new to the forums, but been lurking for quite some time. Hopefully will get to really grow on this site!
So, what better way to start than with new music? I just finished Chopin's Mazurka op 17/4 in A minor, bach's invention in a minor, Mozart's K545, and Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, except for the 1st movement. Waiting for a little bit on that one ;)
I was thinking another beethoven sonata, preferably in some minor key (I'm weird in that I have keys that I like more than others; I can play fairly well in them all but prefer certain keys) so I'm more excited about learning it, and thus am more familiar with it.
So, any suggestions? I was thinking a Bach prelude and fugue, a Chopin nocturne (Also already done 9/2, maybe 55/1, 72/1 or 9/1?), and a Beethoven Sonata?
Anyways, thanks for all thoughts!
WIP:
Bach WTC Fugue 2
Chopin 17/4
          32/1
          70/2

Most people have keys they prefer  :)
Bach is always very difficult, but since you have some experience on contrapuntal music, I think Book I: C minor, D minor, E minor and Book II: F minor should be accessible, though still difficult.
From Beethoven I'd suggest Op. 31 No.2 in D minor, aka Tempest, third movement. It is indeed quite challenging, but definitely worth the trouble.
I play all of the minor key nocturnes except the C minor Op. 48 No. 1, which is very difficult. Not even the most difficult of those are too difficult technically, but challenging interpretetively. From easy to dificult:
C minor Op. Posth
G minor Op. 15/3
C# minor Op. Posth
B flat minor Op. 9/1
F minor Op. 55/1
E minor Op. 72/1
G minor Op. 37/1
F# minor Op. 48/2
C# minor Op. 27/1
C minor Op. 48/1

Try a Goltz prelude. Dude died hem he was 29 .  Shame as super talented and would love to have heard where his music would go. There is a range from manageable for some to playable by few.  The first in this video is lovely and no too bad :-)

Schubert Sonata D845, A Minor 1st Movement? Here is Mitsuko Uchida playing it.

Chopin Waltz, A Minor, Op 34 No 2. Here is Arthur Rubinstein.

A bit stretch, but Schubert Impromptu Op 90 No 1, C Minor. Krystian Zimerman here:

Beethoven Sonata No 1 F Minor, Daniel Baremboim here:

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
