Still hunching my back
on: July 23, 2014, 12:41:39 PM
Hello,
I have tried the next things to keep my back straight while playing the piano:
- Exercises (yoga mostly)
- position of the stool
- distance between me and the piano (measuring the distance of the piano with my forearms, wrists and hands while I am sat)
However, I still have the same result: my back is not keeping straight, and I am hunching my back (when they took my photo in a recital and saw myself, I really really looked like if I was a real hunchback).
I though I already solved it with the advice related to keep a certain distance from the piano, but when I keep playing for longer time, my back is bending without knowing it.
Am I forgetting or missing something else?

I find it much easier not to hunch now that I spend an hour every week playing badmington. Some exercise is better than others for your posture. You need to get the muscles in your lower body in shape... When my lower back tires I still become a hunchback...

I have the same problem of hunching my back and leaning over to keyboard and hanging onto keyboard. I've been trying to fix it and definitely trying to get my core muscle stronger to keep my body upright. Also try to get upper arm free and stronger, so I can use upper arm to control, not my upper body. I also take videos of myself here and there and check how I am improving. But I sill do that without noticing it. It takes so much efforts to revert bad habits. I think if I compare my videos from one year ago, it did slightly improved - maybe 10 degree? Based on the speed I improved, I wonder it'd take another two years.... I think you just need to keep working on it till you really fix the habit.

You can do something more easily than not do something else.
When I align my head properly I feel a small stretch at the base of my skull. I can maintain that stretch feeling while playing. That keeps my head from hunching forward. But what i can't do is avoid hunching my head forward. Too hard to do a negative.
