Opinion on Brahms (Op 76 and Op 79)
on: July 31, 2014, 04:31:42 AM
Hi guys

I'm preparing for college audition and this is my repertoire
1. Bach's prelude and fugue in c minor
2. Haynd Sonata in b minor hob XVI, no. 32
3. Chopin's Etude op. 25 no. 1
4. A romantic piece
5. Romanian dance by Bartok, (first one)

For number 4, a romantic piece, my teacher let me choose from Brahms' op. 76 and the 2 rhapsody op. 79. Which one should I choose to have a balance repertoire?  I was thinking of the first rhapsody. If you happen to play all of them, can you give me a little insight about each one?

I don't know the Op 76 that well ... I've heard it, but haven't really looked at it.

If you can choose from either of the Op. 79, I would go with the 1st rhapsody as it is a larger work.  Based on your repertoire, the first rhapsody may likely be a very big stretch for you.  THe

The second rhapsody is definitely more approachable.  It is also much easier to understand musically.

Either of the rhapsodies will complement your program well.

Best of luck
