Techni and other colors...
on: August 12, 2014, 08:54:34 AM
Watched "Vertigo" yesterday. Damn, I enjoyed it a lot would be an understatement. I loved it ! After some time while watching it I realised that a great deal of the source of my joy came from the colors. They reminded me of the particular color palette of Edward Hopper (and while I was searching for other examples I didn't find one, except maybe in some aspects the colors of some items of fashionmaker Burberry) But the use of color in Vertigo, in combination with the scenery, the use of space, interiors, light and shadow, landscape, composition... so Hopperish. This particular choice of these typical browns, blues, reds, greens, so soft and intense at the same time, smooth, full and rich, so special, they are probably typical for some period of time in America ; colors that were in fashion at that time. But I also think, call me old and grumpy, that the use of beautiful color in painting and movie (and fabrics, textiles) is becoming rare. The colors that I like a lot come from Hopper, Rothko, Van Gogh. (Also in carbuilding, the use of color, except some Lancia, some Fiats, some Renault is not very inspired). And, the longer I watched the movie, the more that these parallels took my attention. There are also really films stills with this typical solitude that characterize a lot of the Hopper paintings.
Just wanted to share my joy and excitement. Thank you Technicolor ! And I wish all the best to everybody using color.

Well, lets make this a more common complaint in what is happening to movies...COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGENARY! I hate it. Even though it's developed, I can still tell when something is just computer generated, it's lifeless and unnatural and ruins the picture for me. And it's getting more and more common these days because it's cheaper than actual locations, sets and props.

I do kind of like how they can tint movies now and make the tint/color style the same for the whole movie. It's more consistent.
