Can anyone recommend a good teacher in NYC?
on: November 29, 2004, 08:43:46 PM
Hello everyone - first I'd like to say that I'm delighted I came across this website - I think it's an invaluable resource for musicians and pianists of all levels! I myself have played the guitar for a few years but have recently become determined to focus on (what else!) the piano!

Which brings me to my request: can anyone recommend a piano teacher in New York city? I'm currently living here and would like to begin as soon as possible. My only interest is in classical music, and I would like a teacher that can communicate and train well. While I'm interested in composition (in the long run), I'd currently like to focus on my technique, sight-reading, and, in general, performance skills. I've had little experience with the piano in the past, having self-taught a handful of pieces of pieces (e.g., maple leaf rag, some of the easier chopin waltzes and nocturnes, etc.).

In terms of practice time, I can and will be dedicating several hours daily. I can already read music (albeit slowly) and have the very basics down.

So if you are, or know of any excellent piano instructors in New York city, please drop me a line. Thanks!

Hi,

Where in NYC are you?  I can recommend couple of excellent Russian teachers if you're willing to commute to Bklyn once or twice a week.  Both have PhDs from top Russian music school and have trained lots of students, from beginners like me to some very advanced performers.   Both are very patient and accomodating, but like their students to take it seriously and practice...  So if you can make it to Bklyn, I'd be happy to give you their contact info.

Cheers,
-Tony.

Hi,

I can highly recommend Olga Rudnik, she's excellent.  Actually, I'm not sure she's taking on new students, but give her a call at 917.417.8379 you can say Tony gave you the number.

Another one is Sophia Genis, she's also very good.  Her number is 718.743.2452  Both charge around the same, but personally I prefer Olga and her style (she's young, energetic and teaches from classical to jazz and improvization, which not too many Russian teachers do very well)

Cheers,
-Tony.
