How do you stretch your hand 13 notes to the right?
on: August 20, 2014, 06:29:54 PM
I am playing a piano song that requires me to hold a low left-hand "A" for a whole note and stretch to a two-octave "F". How is that physically possible? My hand can barely reach 10th before feeling the pain.

If you can't, you roll it. It's not like there's a trick that magically increases your hand span lol

The compositional purpose of the whole note is to maintain an underlying basis to the harmony.  So, depending on the tempo, pedal the original bass note, or, if you want to get fancy, you can use the middle pedal.

Regardless, very few listeners are going to hear the difference one way or another.  And, this advice is coming from the leading poster on rolled chords.

You come across this often in poorly-planned fan arrangements of movie & game soundtracks. Just rearrange it.
What is the piece?

This is excellent advice.

Earl Wild, in his Memoir, refers to this STANDARD!! practice, extensively.
