Chopin Etudes
on: August 25, 2014, 11:27:14 AM
Im currently working on Chopin Etude Op 10 no.4 and
this is my 4th chopin etude (after op.10 no.3,5,12).
My teacher once told me that it is a good idea to work on the first pages of
all chopin etudes if enough time can't be spent for all pages.
So I stared doing that a few days ago and now im able to play
op 10 no.1,2,7  , op 25 no. 9,11 in a slow tempo. (Just their first pages)
But some people have told me that you should only work on Chopin etudes one at a time.
Im not sure if this first page idea is a proper way of getting better. Any suggestions?
(It seems like im already improving from doing this)

My school of thought is that you never waste time playing an etude. You're improving your reading if nothing else, and the Chopin etudes are great pieces to do that with (I can attest to my reading becoming MUCH better after 10/3). You'll also work in specific areas of technique, so it isn't a bad idea to work on two or three at once for just reading. However, if you wish to truly learn them, read through others, but only give special attention to one. Trying to learn more than one etude fully is a disaster waiting to happen.

It depends where you stand I guess...my teacher did ask me to do that once before...vaguely remember working on bits from a selection of Chopin Etudes but I did focus on op.10 no.2 in particular. That was quite awhile back though...the purpose was to work on different types of technique.

I'm focusing on mastering op.10 nos.8&12 and op.25 no.1 now (all 3 at once) together with Chopin's Scherzo no.4. When I'm done with those 3 my teacher (who's overseas) will assign me another 3 again
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu
