learning repertoire... help
on: September 29, 2014, 12:17:54 PM
I'm a bit messed up about learning repertoire. I'm a freshman at a conservatory and the longest time I spent on a piece was a month (reading through plus memorizing) (Schumann's Aufschwung). Is that too slow? I can't help but feel insecure.

For the first semester, my teacher assigned me a Bach Prelude and Fugue, Mozart Sonata, Traumes Wirren by Schumann, a Chopin etude and Jardins sous la pluie by Debussy.

Learning repertoire takes as long as it takes.

Don't worry about how long it takes.

Fine-quality work takes longer to complete than speedy, sloppy work!

There are too many people who do speedy, sloppy work, which no one will pay for.

There are never enough people who do fine-quality work that is worth good money!

A month for a large scale piece like the one you mentioned (I'm assuming it's Opus 12/2 in B flat minor?) is quite a short amount of time, usually not long enough to efficiently learn the piece well. If you're doing multiple pieces and completing them within a month (all of them) that's quite the achievement, especially with the material you're doing now.
Speaking of, what are you playing? Which Bach P&F are you playing? Chopin Etude? You may also want to try to find time to study a Beethoven sonata while you're at it; but always give priority to class pieces of course.
Have fun!
