Pascal Rogé quits competition jury over ‘dishonesty and fraud’
on: October 07, 2014, 01:23:19 AM
Pascal Rogé recently walked out on an international piano competition in Monza, claiming that the result was rigged in favour of the Italian candidates. If you haven't heard about this yet, do read Pascal's initial account, and follow up by reading the response of one of the Italian judges, and the competition itself. They have now published the scorings of each juror for all rounds, and it certainly looks like Pascal has made an enormous fool out of himself. Here's Pascal's initial message:

The response of one of the Italian jurors, Roberto Prosseda:

After this was posted, the competition made public the votings of each juror durinf the competition. Check here:

The competition also issued a press release and are now planning to take legal action against Pascal. Read here:

Allow me to post one major "takeaway" from this disaster.
If you, as an aspiring pianist, enter a competition, please know that you are doing so not so much to win the thing, but for the opportunity to see and be seen by a wide audience of fellow pianists and other professional musicians. This exposure is extraordinarily valuable, especially to musicians who may not have had much exposure beyond their own education and local contacts to date. It's worth the pain and effort for that.

A few years ago, it was widely believed in the boxing game that if you wanted to win a fight in Italy against an Italian boxer, you would need to knock them out to win.

good luck judging other competitons Pascal lol.
He's chairman of the Geneva competition next month! Unless things have changed, in the light of this scandal. He was supposed to go to the Hong Kong piano competition now to judge, too, but it was cancelled...
