Rzewski - Winnsboro cotton mill blues
on: October 12, 2014, 01:25:55 AM
Hi guys! I want to share this piece with you, one of the pieces that I played in my entrance exam to the music university in Barcelona, Spain.

This ballade is inspired on the work day of black african slaves in America and the oppressive power of the industrial machines over them. Program music in a pure state. Use of clusters, and even a new concept of "clusters" that I personally call "melodic cluster", because you have to emphasise one note of that cluster.

Well, I don't want to sepak anymore and I wish you a pleasent litening. Thanks!  ;)

Wow, a great achievement ! I love this piece and toyed with it a little bit but didn't have the guts
to take it on seriously. Kudos to anyone who does ! Some very jumpy and difficult writing here, with cruel stretches. You sail through it all with few problems.

You're a bit on the slow side but have a good drive. Ultimately the machines could sound a bit more menacing, especially the one that seems to spin out of control at the end of the central
section with all the repeats. Pure delicious mayhem, that is :D

I am sure you can, and will, make much more of this iconic piece over time. Keep going !

My favorite version of this one is by Roger Wright. Tremendously exciting ! I found Hamelin's
version pale and dutiful by comparison.
