Yes, appearance affects an audience reaction, whether judges, adjudicators, whatever.  Look at behaivoiral studies quoted on this forum.
What the judges are expecting or looking for, depends on culture, fashion, age, etc.  You choose at your peril.
The picture shows what I would call the "Lang-Lang" style since he has appeared on television looking like that, but with more spikey top hair.  He is popular now, so make your own judgement.  Whatever you do with your appearance, make sure the look shows you chose it deliberately, that it is not something that just happened when you got out of bed this morning.  IMHO.  This picture is neat around the edges, which shows some care was taken.

As long as it's deliberate, then you'll be fine. We have people like Lang Lang and Kissin who are internationally famous.
It's honestly your playing that will affect them most.

So would getting a tattoo on my face be okay? :D

A teardrop, perhaps? Nay, nay. You should get "lil Wayne" tattooed on yer face.  ;)

Only two types of people get face tattoos: neo-nazis and mobsters.

I spent $3500 to get a third eye removed from my forehead. I was age 37 before I found a surgeon I would trust not to leave a big zipper of stitches on my face.  The mole was right in the middle where the India third eye goes, you think Brahman relative women would have been lining up to take me out.
After that I got a few dates.
I don't know why someone would spend $200 to put a permanent mark back up there.  You want to try it out, use a marker for a couple of days.
Or go down to the bus stop by the half-way house and see how many women respond to the talk of the ex-cons down there.  Most of them have tattoos on their faces or necks.

Does it really cost that much to remove a mole?
Actually the surgeon was $3300, all cash, no insurance help.  But it cost me $1000 in fees to a psychologist to talk about why single women ignored me so completely before he got the bright idea of asking around about who was a really good plastic surgeon.  I had a zipper on my chin from a bicycle accident age 11, stiched up at the emergency room, that lasted about 25 years.   I didn't need another zipper on my forehead from some average doctor.
I think I got hit on two weeks ago by a woman clerking at the dollar store.  That never used to happen, not even my first wife really hit on me.  She just knew me very well, but I was second choice to a tall dark, upper classman who didn't give her the time of day.
