Similar pieces - Handel
on: November 17, 2014, 08:48:19 PM
I recently go into playing some baroque keyboard music.

My absolute favourite piece is Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith.

Could anyone recommend other similar pieces to this?
(Also love the Brandenburg Concertos but I'm just looking for for solo pieces)

Many thanks!

You could start by finishing off the suite from which it comes.

Well Händel of course is a big enough composer so you can say there is only one Händel.

Why don't you check out Scarlatti (555 sonatas to choose from; everyone can find something to his/her taste)
Some finely played examples you can find here:

There are slow ones like K9,K87 (very beautiful) and fast and sunny ones like K159.
Some have titles or nickname's (like 'the cat's fugue' for example) and a story attached to them. Always interesting to motivate young students i would think. Also when played slower they still sound OK.

Couperin with among others the "hit" tic tac choc:

A little less sunny music but still are Telemans "Fantaisies pour Clavessin"

Thanks  stringoverstrung,

Sonata after Reincke BWV 965 is very much to my taste, and tic tac choc looks quite fun too.

Already learning some Scarlatti, I forgot to mention that..

Very cool. Which ones of Scarlatti if you don't mind me asking ( I'm a big Scarlatti fan)?
