Would this be odd?
on: December 12, 2014, 02:24:57 AM
I want to buy my teacher a ham for christmas. Not a very big one, but enough for him and his family for xmas dinner. He kind of leads a bit of a bohemian lifestyle and I think a ham would be very handy for him. What would you think? I'm an adult, BTW, he also teaches my 11y.o. daughter. It might be strange coming from a 12 year old but from a middle aged lady, it kind of makes sense right?

That one is amusing.  It's a bit memorable for sure.  "Yeah, this one year a student gave me a ham for Christmas."

There could be some spin on "hamming it up" for a performance.  Yuck, yuck. ::)

Hi slane,

No, buying any gift for a teacher is a thoughtful way of saying thank you. Gift ideas for teachers can be google searched if you feel odd about the ham in particular.

I always found it heartwarming and unexpected whenever I received a gift from a student.

It made me feel appreciated and well thought of, Joe.

Better get yourself a student or three, then? I'm quite sure that you have much to impart about banjo playing and developing and archive of scanned Romantic piano concertos.

Un Hamelin, peut-être?...

My dad's a piano tuner and at Christmas time one of his customers always gives him a large fish for us all to eat.

Banjo ham. Brilliant.
Provided that it's been strung up long enough to enable its maturity...

As a teacher, I am always grateful for any gifts, as they express appreciation for my work that goes beyond the tuition check.  That said, I would consider a ham a particularly thoughtful gift which would add more to my family's Christmas than any number of treble clef knickknacks.  ;)

Lovely to give a gift for Christmas.
But how about something classic and sweet?

A good bar of real chocolate?
Or a good Italian coffee package?

A good bottle of wine, that they can have at Christmas dinner also sounds better than a ham to me.

yes--I have boxes of treble clef stuff...the ham is a much better idea.    :D  maybe the ham from your 11yr old and a nice bottle of wine from you.. Bohemian types always appreciate a nice bottle of wine...  8)

I gave him a lovely little 2kg, freerange, local, female ham.
He was both pleased and surprised! :)
He said "that will get us through Christmas!". So my reasoning was correct!

They tell you whether it was male or female?  I don't think I'd want to know.

Yes you do, because boy-pig tastes very strong.
It actually came up because my daughter was fascinated by the free range turkey posters. It hadn't occurred to her that animals, other than chickens, needed free range status. I pointed out that the pork at this particular butchers is also free range and he added , and South Australian, and female.
I guess the boy-pigs gets sent to the supermarket, poor things.

Sure, give him a ham. When I lived in Ghana I had a language teacher. One year, the day before Christmas he came to my office with a Christmas gift, a live turkey. I worked the rest of the day with the turkey wandering around my office, tied to the leg of my desk.

What about hot dogs?  Do they say whether those are male or female?  Or give a percentage male/female.

I saw someone giving away a ham the other day.  It crossed my mind that it could actually be this piano teacher.

Random stranger on the street:  "Pst, hey you want a ham?"
Bob:  "Are you a piano teacher?"
Random stranger: "How the heck did you know that?"

(continued)

Random stranger:  "I was at a restaurant.  A lady was breastfeeding her baby.  A man became enraged and threw a ham at her.  He missed.  I caught it, so I kept it."
Bob:  "Is that a banjo ham by any chance?"
Random stranger: "Yes.  How the heck did you know that?"
Bob:  "Looks like a free range, South Australian, female banjo ham too...."
Random stranger:   :o

To ask about a gift for ones piano teacher in the TEACHING Forum would likely be
out of place but funny?

Small things, small minds?   ..... is that it?   will that cause Bob to crack up?  ;D ;D
