Lessons in childhood, now wishing to restart
on: December 20, 2014, 10:03:54 PM
Hello, Would like to ask for any advice about restarting self study from basics. Last level of playing was as teenager. Moonlight Sonata (adagio) now 30+ years later, need to revisit basic theory, practice etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Start anywhere.  You can't possibly go wrong.  Then expand according to your interests.

It depends. What do you want to achieve?

Well I was exactly the same a few years ago. I made very little progress by myself so I got a teacher, who is excellent and now I am making good progress.

Check out Graham Fitch and his ebook series about practicing. Lots and lots of good advice there, suitable for everyone who is above absolute basics level (learning to read notes and naming the keys on the piano). You can start by going to his blog:

Having made exactly the same journey as you recently, I also strongly advice you to pay a lot of attention to ergonomics. I did not ... and it cost me an awful lot of pain and trouble. If you don't watch out, you might even gain injuries that you will never get rid of.
You can for example watch this video for an introduction -  https://vimeo.com/99963255

I would add the fact that when older, time is often difficult to find. So, don't waste time by learning the wrong ways.
I started again piano at 35 by myself, but for one year I didn't use the right habits. Learning a lot in forums and on the net helped me beyond my hopes.
If you take a teacher, take care, there are also bad teachers who teach bad habits.
