Armando's rumba harmony.
on: December 06, 2004, 02:51:23 AM
Hi,
I am a sax player.
My 18 old son plays piano. His favorite pianists are Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea
(mine too :). He plays some of their music on good level.
I want to ask accords of Armando's rumba. We picked the solo.
But I have a difficulty with proper accords.
Please help. Just accords.
Thanks.
Michael.

Of course this is a standard so alot of people will reharmonise and substitute the chords, add extentions, or even change everything around.

Sorry, may be you can make full page size picture?
Last bars of each line are missed...
Thanks.
Michael.

I run a very high resolution so those pictures are kind of big without resizing.

But they are complete, look below. Or select them and save them on your hard drive. Then print them. Just right click and select "Save picture as" , then open it and print.

Super! Thanks.
By the way may be you can recommend where to find nice transcription of it.
We have good Spain. So I would like that my son will play this one. He doesn't have
practice with improvisation. But his strong part is good reading of jazz accords and technique.

In jazz there aren't much transcriptions, and most of them are solo transcriptions.

Jazz means 'improvised western music'. It is always improvised. In jazz you have fake or real books. Books with 'lead sheets' like this one.

Jazz musicians just take that info and then they give their own version/interpretation of it, always a little different from the original and always improvised.

So he needs to practive improvising.

You are absolutely right.
I feel free with improvisation in different keys.
But I am really going "crasy"with C. Parker's omnibook transcription.

What is interesting that my harmony for Armando's rumba on 98% similar to your's
picture accords. I still don't like some of them. But this kind of book is just a standard frame.
Tomorrow my son goes to his piano teacher. Good young guy (with bac in jazz).
He will fix it on Chick's manner.
Thanks again.
Michael. Montreal.

Jazz players do transcriptions all the time. At least I do anyway. Not only solo transcriptions but transcriptions of tunes and arrangements. I just got finished transcribing Bill Evans' solo arrangement of "Here's That Rainy Day" from the Album "Alone". You would think it takes longer, but it actually saves time, because by the time you're done, practicing it isn't really an issue because you'll know the music inside and out, and on a much deeper level. Plus, your ear skills will improve dramatically by doing it.

Also, beyond doing your own transcribing, there are tons and tons of transcriptions available for purchase that are full-performance transcriptions, as in not just the solos. I got an Art Tatum book about a month ago and I'm scared to even try playing it. That guy was a monster.

Brian,
don't be scared :)
I feel exactly as you when I "grab" something from "stars".
I bought "Koln concert" transcription of Keith Jarrett for my son.
Sure it's  impossible to put on paper the exact performance...
We both have fun. My son plays I am listenning.
In case with Keith it's really cool to have the music written even after many many time of listening.
By the way on last summer Montreal Jazz fest I was on Keith Jarrett performance
and on 3 Chick Corea concerts. Amaizing. I had chance to meet with Chick.
First concert was solo. Second Acoustic Band with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl. And last concert Electric Band with Eric Mariental -sax and Gambale- guitar.
Cooool  stuff!
