Geoffrey Tozer's Medtner
on: December 07, 2004, 10:45:08 PM
Apparently his is the only recordings avaliable for complete Medtner work.

Anyone has them>? How is his playing?

I really want to listen to more of Medtner. (Too bad Gilels didn't play too much of Medtner.)

Tozer's Medtner is superb. He hasn't recorded all Medtner's works yet I believe, but he's recorded most of them (In 8 volumes, and 2 Piano Concerto CDs). And in my opinion his playing of the Medtner sonatas is better than Hamelin's.

Tozer's Medtner is indeed superb. And I agree that in some aspects his playing can be more involving than Hamelin's (although when it comes to the virtuoso aspects of Medtner's music Hamelin is incomparable). Apart from the 8 volumes of solo piano music and the concerti, Tozer has also recorded two song volumes (I absolutely recommend you the more recent one which includes the Sonate-Vocalise, a thrillingly gorgeous work) and the violin sonatas nos 1 and 2 (with Mordkovich - again a great issue).

Hamish Milne is also recording Medtner's complete piano music (7 volumes so far) and he too is phenomenal. He records for CRD. I consider him to be in par with Tozer.

Earl Wild has recorded the 2 improvisations and several other works with his usual great pianism shining throughout.

And of course, Medtner's own recordings are a treasure (3 volumes of solo piano music including Beethoven's Appassionata on Appian and a volume of his concerti - as far as I know).

I still think that Hamelin's set of the sonatas is indispensable, though, his grasp of these works' architecture and his ease in handling their difficulties is not met by any other pianist so far.

I have his recording of the sonatas. They are very well played. However, I haven't heard any other recordings of Medtner's piano sonatas aside from one recording by Gilels. There may be better options for a complete set out there.

No pianist yet has recorded all the piano works by Medtner to my knowledge.

Hamelin's technical perfection Medtner is unsurpassable, and he also brought a lot of good things to the sonatas. I sometimes find Tozer's approach, especially in some of the Tales, being too cautious - quite evident in the latest Op.9 No.2 for example. In general I'm most satisfied with Milne (except the brutally played Sonata-Elegy), although unfortunately the project with CRD seems to have halted already.

Demidenko's 2 recordings are also wonderful. And there's always Medtner's own recordings too :)

Vadim Repin has recorded the 3rd violin sonata "Epica" with Berezovsky (coupled with Ravel's sonata) and Oleg Kogan the 1st sonata with Richter. Both are excellent.
