first piano lesson next week, looking for a few tips
on: February 18, 2015, 09:55:19 PM
Hi everyone, I've bought a keyboard a good while ago but I never got around to learning properly, however about 6 or 7 weeks ago I decided it was time to knuckle down and really start putting my all into it.

I've been practicing for at least an hour pretty much every day for the last 7 weeks and today I have booked my first lesson with a teacher I found online.

I can read music fine and am really practicing sight reading (using apps on my tablet and phone, I've only been concentrating on this for the last few days but can already see an improvement)
I don't actually know any scales or any chords, I just play what I see on the sheet music in front of me.

I was wondering if anyone can give me any tips to concentrate on over the next week to kind of give me a head start before my first lesson.

I've attatched a little clip of me playing (badly) 'Somebody to love' by Queen

Any help would be much appreciated  :)

Sounds like your keyboard is 88 keys and weighted from the recording, but if it isn't, get one with 88 keys that's weighted and touch sensitive.
Your teacher will tell you what to do. Tell him or her what you've done in the past and they'll guide you from there.

cheers for the reply chopinlover01

My keyboard is only 61 (I think) keys and they are not weighted, I had my first lesson yesterday and my teacher said I might want to invest in a weighted 88 but said I should be fine for the moment with what I have.

Anyway onto the lesson, I decided to change teachers (before my first lesson) the first bloke didn't sound all that enthusiastic and wasn't all that accomadating with times.
First impressions of my new teacher were really good, she's only a young girl but she made me feel really comfortable right from the start and I didn't have any nerves with her (I was worried about playing in front of someone who was really good for the first time), the first lesson was more about me showing her what I could already do and talking about what sort of stuff I wanted to learn.

She did say that she was really impressed at where I am so far considering I've only been playing for a few months and said that I would benifit more from 1 hour lessons every two weeks rather than weekly 1/2 hour lessons so I'm booked in for another lesson next Tuesday.

All in all I'm feeling a hell of a lot more positive now I've got that initial lesson out of the way and am looking forward to next weeks now

Well sounds great! You most definitely will have to change to 88 and weighted/touch sensitive at some point, preferably sooner rather than later (an acoustic piano is even better if you hope to do anything classical). I'm glad you enjoyed your lesson and all. Keep us updated with your progress in the Audition Room!
