Sets of pieces to record?
on: March 09, 2015, 08:44:50 PM
I am potentially set up with an amazing opportunity. A friend of my mothers attended a live concert of my teachers with her (my mother), and he took interest in my playing, and he may also be doing this for another student.
He has a professional quality recording studio (he has recordings of his own playing; admittedly, not the best playing, but good quality audio!  ;D), and he wishes to help me create recordings in the near future.
So, I got to thinking- what set(s) of pieces makes for good recordings?
To start, I was thinking some basic stuff to get the process of recording down in a studio (done it before in my house, so I have some experience, but obv. a studio experience will be different). I was thinking the Bach two part Inventions, and the Clementi Sonatinas op 36, so I could have a recording of "beginning advanced" rep, so to speak. Maybe this isn't a great idea to have the Clementi and Bach in the same set, but I'll think on it.
Anyways, what are your thoughts?

Any reason you are specifically looking for a set?  To be clear, are you doing this for recording studio experience or do you really need a recorded set (for an audition tape or similar)?

If the purpose is to gain studio experiences, just select a variety of pieces that you feel are ready for performance.  The recording workflow is a bit different then preparing for a recital, and you will learn more about it as you go about the actual recording activities.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

It's for potential audition tapes, and potentially to be commercially sold, where a set of the Bach inventions might do well. I don't know though.
