I need help from you experts end teachers
on: December 09, 2004, 06:27:52 PM
Hi everyone! I’m new here and I’m really glad I found this message board!
I need all the good advices that you experts and piano teachers can give me. I read a few threads here (like memorizing…) But if I could get all you can give me at one place it would be nice. Here’s what I would like to know:  What are the best ways to progress continually in my learning process? What are the best ways to practice daily EFFICIENTLY?  What do you, piano teachers, tell your students to do between their lessons?  I want to maximize the efficiency of my work time on the piano. Here’s my situation:  I’ve been playing for a while, but only by ear( I could not read music at all). I Play piano at my church . 1 ½ year ago, I decided to learn about everything I didn’t know (sight reading, theory etc) and found a teacher. She’s a good teacher, but somehow I don’t progress the way I’d like. That’s why I’m asking for a little outside help. What could I do to really improve my sight reading for instance…how long should I practice everyday, what should I practice everyday or regularly   (aside from the work my teacher gives me…scales, chords…?) What do you suggest. What’s the best way to learn a piece of music? It takes time I know but if you don’t do it properly and don’t have the good methods, I guess it’s like wasting your time. What I’d like to know is what are the tips end advices other piano teachers give to their students that might benefit me. Also, after 1 ½ year, what should normally an adult student be able to play? Can you give some examples Thanks a lot (sorry for my English, I know it’s not perfect… :))  Can you help me to improve faster on the piano…I know there are a lot of question in my post, but I’d appreciate it if you could provide some help. Didn’t know where to put this topic so I placed it in two different sections.

If you didn't already, I suggest your read CC Chang's online book about piano learning and practice, you can download it here :

You can also make a search on this forum on these topics you want to learn from. Almost everyone here would recommend you to read Bernhard's posts. He's sort of our piano Guru here.

I second that: Chang is essential reading.

I have not seen this thread before, so I have actually posted my reply on the other thread you posted on the teaching board. Enjoy. ;D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.
