too funny . . .
on: April 01, 2015, 09:51:47 PM
They appear to be nice kids, and they play well.  I can't figure out though if some of the behaviour is staged or authentic.  Someone in the orchestra seems to have a huge smirk throughout and sometimes even appears to be chuckling.  The behaviour of some other orchestra members is odd as well.  Does anyone know the context of this video?

Hi Michael!

nice video you posted there! I recognized the Militaire-march by Schubert, since I have it for example in an arranged version by Richard Krentzlin, of  a Schubert-"potpurri / medley", of easy-intermediate difficulty, for piano solo, in a collection-book!

@Behaviour of orchestra-members: hmm, I didn't spot too relevant oddities, but that doesn't mean much, since, as I pointed out in another thread, I won't be accustomed to oddities, - and they won't bother me.  :)

What I noticed, was, that many people of the audience were casually / informally clothed, just "normal" people, it seemed to me, and as far as the "two soloists" are in the middle of our view, I liked both of them, while being the only things I disliked were the constant circular (added: "ellipsoid" ) upperbodymovements of the (nice!) girl!  ;)

The name Arie Vardi, which I read in the YT-description, is known to me.

___

Very funny (imho)  ;D would be the following, too:

I spotted the bassoon, which a member of the orchestra holds: I imagined at once the following:

"What, if, during the two nice pianists are just playing the march militaire, the bassoon-player would BLOW FORCEFULLY into his instrument, playing a VERY DISSONANT TONE very loudly, into the "thick of" the piano-playing, and THEN smiling???  ;D ;D

Very cordial greetings from: 8_octaves!

"Never be afraid to play before an artist.
The artist listens for that which is well done,
the person who knows nothing listens for the faults." (T. Carreño, quoting her 2nd teacher, Gottschalk.)

I noticed the peculiar reactions of the orchestra too.
Its almost the reaction you might expect if they were both wearing their underwear on the outside. Or something.
Apologies for reposting this pic, but the video brought it to mind:

At the very beginning of the video, when the two pianists are walking in and sitting down, look at how the people in the orchestra react to their entrance.
Some seem bemused, others seem to be biting their tongues.
There is an air of 'what' about their reactions and its odd.

-Ok..well, I think I have seen too much concerts in my life to see or react on that.
-Isnt the most funny thing the dorky choice of piano piece?

Hi 8_octaves,

Yes, she is a very "nice" girl.  And she plays piano, too.  This is similar to one of those times when I almost wish I weren't 40 years old.  Then I remember what some things were like in my 20s, and I am glad again to be 40. ;)

The video angle was peculiar when just looking at the two faces, at least show the hands, we don't know what they are doing down there lol :)

I fail to see what is so peculiar about the orchestra members. Some are smiling or looking around and some are talking to each other. I think that's what they do when they don't have to play. The
facial expressions did not bother me, I've seen far worse from famous pianists. The girl, even though she has a scary way of looking up, seems really very attractive. And last not least, their playing is from the highest caliber, as one would expect when Arie Vardi is involved (I guess he's their mentor). Their effortless way makes me despair of my own 4-hand efforts.

Humour can be graceful and gentle, even subtle and loving . . . all is not of the brute force Three Stooges variety. ;)

Normally an orchestra member doesn't sit there chuckling in a performance.  Maybe he was just having a good day. :)

Having played with numerous ensembles, in my experience this happens more often then not.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
