While I have no doubt about the good effects of musical training on cognitive abilities, all these studies have one major methodological problem: It's not possible to actually have a proper control group, because to become a musician requires such a long training period (years or even more than a decade). It will always remain a huge factor of uncertainty whether only those, who already in the beginning were better than average on the studied properties, will advance to professional musicians.

Even when it comes to amateurs the selection is hard, most people who find something really difficult will simply quite at some point.
