Good Bach piece to add to my repertoire?
on: April 14, 2015, 01:04:02 AM
Hi everyone!

I'm currently learning Beethoven's "Tempest" Sonata, and Chopin's Scherzo No. 2. I've been thinking about adding a Bach piece onto my repertoire.

To be very honest, I haven't played many works from the WTC's- Just Prelude No. 12, from WTC II.
Overall, for Bach, I've played Inventions 8, 11, and 13.
Anyways, since I have two pieces that are generally pretty romantic, I was thinking of adding in a Bach piece- do you guys have any suggestions for Bach pieces I could add to my repertoire? Preferably something from either of the WTC's :)
Thank you for reading this!!

The fugue to match your Prelude?

The fugue to match your Prelude?

Ahhh, I tried that a while back- but it just didn't go well; I was really stressed at the time, and my teacher doesn't think it's a good idea to continue playing that.
I think I just need something completely different- maybe a Bach in a major key? My repertoire in the last 2 years has consisted of mostly dark pieces (like Rach Prelude in C# minor)

Well, it's a three part fugue and one of the easier ones. Rather than finding a piece to add to your (performing) repertoire, I'd suggest you work through the inventions, in order, starting with the two part ones. Not necessarily fully polished, but up to a reasonable standard.

Then you can tackle more of the WTC or the Suites.

The good news is that it will vastly improve your romantic repertoire as an added bonus.

Ain't from a WTC, but the Italian concerto is nice. I'm also playing Scherzo 2, as well as ballade 3, etude 10/5, and 25/6. It goes very nicely with those for Chopin. For Beethoven, it goes fine with the Pathetique Sonata, I personally think it sounds best if you put Chopin in between them. It sounds easy at first, and the score looks insanely easy, but BOY IS IT HARD TO PLAY. I would rank it right around that Scherzo (at full speed) and it's a very nice piece.

Take the time to learn BWV 831. I think it is very worth it.

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
