How's this for progress
on: December 11, 2004, 09:05:37 PM
I have a question about progress. In other words, what's the typical time to learn something.
Let me explain. I'm returning to the piano after a 25-plus year absence. When I stopped (school, marriage, kids, career, house, etc), in my repertoire were the following works (among others):
Liszt Liebestraum #3
Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# minor
Grieg Sonata in E minor (1st 3 movements)
Pictures at an exhibition (most of it)
Liszt's transcription of Beethoven symphony #5 - 1st movement
Schubert sonata in B flat - 1st movement.
Rachmaninoff 18th variation on Paganini
Beethoven Sonata Op. 49 (G major)
Obviously some were better than others.
Now that I'm returning and lessoning again, I've expressed an interest in Bach. My teacher suggested the Well-Tempered Clavier as a good place to start, so that's where we are.
I started taking lessons in August, and since then, I've resurrected the Beethoven above, working on the Grieg and Rachmaninoff Prelude.
I've learned the Prelude from WTC in C minor, and have (almost) mastered the fugue - still some rough spots. I've begun working on on the Fugue in C major. My teacher suggests that after the C-major fugue we work on the Mozart a-minor sonata.
So, that's what I've done in 4 months.
Is this typical? I practice about an hour a day - sometimes more, some days (1 a week - work commitments) not at all.
Suggestions, comments graciously welcome.
Thanks for your input.
