(forgive me) Chopin Etude 25/6 measures 51-52
on: April 21, 2015, 07:16:18 PM
Hello, yes I know there have been far too many topics created about Chopin's etudes - especially this one. So please don't tell me that again. I don't find this etude over challenging it's just those darn measures 51-52 and again at 55-56. I can handle the whole thing but when it gets to this I my right hand falls off my piano and drops to the ground.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO PLAY THESE MEASURES

Yes, I have practiced these measures solo for 2 months. Yes, I have looked in piano street and all over the web for how to play these darn measures! Everyone else doesn't seem to have trouble with it but I do! Can you please help?!

I have been playing this piece for maybe 2-3 months, I have kinda small hands I'm 15.  PLEASE HELP I'M SO FRUSTRATED WITH THESE MEASURES!   :(  >:(  >:(  ???  :-\  >:(   >:(

Hi pencilart,

at first: I cannot play the etude properly, but I tried, and from time to time I try it just for fun, again. So please note that I'm not a professional.

But it happened some years ago, that I discussed, via the web, this etude ( and the etude op. 10,2 ) with my friend from the USA.

He, then, sent me, amongst other things in a post-package, a version of the etude in which he himself ( or his own teacher, of whom I will inform all of you much later ) had written things into (my friend is a piano-teacher, too ), and he was of the opinion these annotations might help me - and I of course wanted to read his annotations, too!  :) So he sent them.

But in the aftermath, as I said, I didn't study it very intensively, but I remembered the sheets I got just now. So, if there should be "whys" and "whats" upcoming, you should discuss them not with me - I'm too bad in playing it!  ;D

Perhaps you'll have a look and then decide whether a ) it's helpful, b ) you already have tried this, and / or c ) it isn't useful for you. Then, of yourse, you'll discard it.

I have attached 2 pages. Sorry for bad quality!

Greetings from 8_octaves.

If have to pull my old copy out. But have you not tried the Cortot prepatory study(ise) outlined in his edition if these?  Typically working through that allows the challenge to sort itself out. If no then you're
Not quite ready for the work.  Many mistake these etudes as a way to build the technique required however they are more accurately need the pre req tech in place and these simply refine them in a musical context so u the fundamentals are not there you will struggle until you work  it out and through the basic technique. Then go back and apply to the étude

If you can do the rest OK and it's only these measures that give you trouble, I'd suggest your fingering may be the issue. These are, if I recall rightly, the only bits where you change direction midway through the runs - just check that you aren't getting your fingers in a bit of a twist where you do.

8_octaves: Thank you for those pages, I will try them out!

Visitor: I have heard of the Cortot studies but I do not know where to find them. Can you post a link or tell me how I can find them? Thanks

j_menz: Here is the right hand fingering I have been using:

5-3   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   1-3   4-2   1-3   4-2  5-1   4-2   3-1     4-1   3-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   5-1   4-2   3-1   3-2

Is this correct? The part I have in bold is what really gets me.

Thanks everyone!

Hi visitor!

That's very interesting!! Should be on scorser, too, I think. BTW.: I've looked at it, and it seems that my friend, in his writings, has mainly relied upon the Cortot-fingering (the one which finally was printed over the actual score), but in 1 or 2 cases he slightly had modified it!

Thank you for the insight, @Visitor!

Many greetings from: 8_octaves!!

I am trying to keep my '2nd finger slide' technique consistent in this passage.  My fingering goes...

4/2  3/2  4/1  3/2 | 5/1  4/2  5/1  4/2 | 5/1  4/2  5/1  4/2 | 3/1  4/2  3/1  4/2 | 5/1  4/2  3/2  4/1 | 3/2  5/1 4/2  5/1 | 4/2/  5/1  4/2  5/1 | 4/2  5/1  4/2  3/1  |  3/2....

The trick for my hand was the last 4 16ths in the first measure.  Not sure why.  It just did not feel right for quite a while and still trips me up as I get closer to 'tempo'.

if you to play these measures with a rotation of your wrist, this will make it much easier to play.
Try it out and it'll work.

Curious, but why is it in every other post you state your age?

What?! Give me the most recent example where I stated my age. Besides I'm not even playing this any more.
