Reliable, accurate (as possible) Mozart biography?
on: April 25, 2015, 03:52:01 PM
Hi there,

I'm new here, so if I posted in the wrong place, let me know!

As anyone knows who's looked for one, there are hundreds and hundreds of biographies of W.A. Mozart. I'm looking for the most accurate one, using the most primary sources and best cross-referencing.

I know, I'm asking for a lot. Just let me know what you've read and what you thought of it.

(I'm on a bender, reading composer biographies. Alan Walker's multi-volume Liszt bio is very, very good, fyi!)

The best one is Mozart at the Gateway to his Fortune.  Puts everything in its proper perspective.

It looks like an interesting book, but seems to cover only the last four years of his life, so not sure that it could be considered a full biography.

The point is it's the best - and I'm acquainted with all of the worthwhile ones.  As I said, it puts things in perspective.  It's more about his career than his genius (which was after all his concern) - therefore you get closest to the real Mozart.  Braunbehrens' Mozart in Vienna is also excellent.  Mozart, a Cultural Biography should also be on your wish list.
