Editions like Cortot editions
on: April 25, 2015, 07:25:17 PM
Are there any editions of piano works that give advice and excercises like Cortot's? I find his very helpful, but his are mainly for chopin. Also, if anyone knows of one for the schumann fantasy that would be very helpful.

Hi,

I think extensive editions like the Cortot ones of Chopin are not too frequently appearing. They might be exceptional, in a way.

So, we might, perhaps, to "step one level back" , and search for "instructive editions".

An instructive edition should exist of the Fantasy op. 17, of Schumann, but since I don't have it, I don't know how eleborate the instructions are.

Klavier-Werke von Robert Schumann. Erste mit Fingersatz und Vortragsbezeichnung versehen Instructive Ausgabe. Nach den Handschriften und persnlicher Ueberlieferung herausgegeben von Clara Schumann. Dritter Band (No. 14-19). No. 14: Koncert ohne Orchester. Dritte grosse Sonate. F moll. Op. 14 No. 15: Kinderscenen. Op. 15 No. 16: Kreisleriana. Op. 16 No. 17: Phantasie. Op. 17 No. 18: Arabeske. Op. 18 No. 19: Blumenstck. Leipzig u. Brssel, B&H (V.Nr. 619) [ca. 1880]. 119 lithogr. S. fol. Ln. [RARE PRINTED MUSIC] / Schumann, Robert (1810-1856)

In English ( I summarize ): It's the 3rd volume, Edited by Clara Schumann, of R. Schumann's works, being an instructive edition, and following and showing the fingering and performance-indications given in the manuscripts and / or taken from personal tradition.

There's newer, by Wilhelm Kempff revised version ( e.g. 1986 ) of it, too, in some libraries. Perhaps you can get it somehow.

______________

But as we know, Alfred Cortot wasn't only an expert in Chopin, he also was a Schumann-fan. So he did this:

Fantaisie, op. 17 [Música notada] : pour piano
    Schumann, Robert 1810-1856
N.º depósito legal    B 28789-1998 Oficina Depósito Legal Barcelona
N. de editor    EMS 5429
Autor personal    Schumann, Robert (1810-1856)
Título uniforme    [Fantasías, piano, op. 17, do mayor]
Igol
Descripción física    42 p. ; 30 cm
Nota área publ.    Cop. 1946 de Ediciones Salabert ( Addition by me: there are c 1947-versions, too )
Materia    Música para piano
Autor Secundario    Cortot, Alfred (1877-1962)

which should be to obtain somehow, too.

But I don't have it either. Perhaps you can have a look at one or both of the two, and find out how extensive / elaborate the annotations are.

And perhaps others have additional sources / versions / editions which should be mentioned here.

Cordially, 8_octaves!

For Ravel's Gaspard and Miroirs, there are the editions by Nancy Bricard published by Alfred.  They contain extensive notes for redivisions, fingerings, alternates passages ...etc

there are instructive Editions by Theodor Kullak for the Beethoven Sonatas.
As far as I know, Godowsky also made instructions, e.g. the Op.66 by Chopin or Glinka's Lark.

Check out Busoni's editions of J.S. Bach and Schnabel's editions of Beethoven.

The guy asked for an instructive edition. The Busoni is one of them. I didn't say I liked the Busoni edition. I just said the guy that he might be interested in checking this out.

Why are they crap ? Because they are full of aditions, tempo markings, dynamics and all ? Well, that's what an instructive edition is, isn't it ? If you're looking for a clean, Urtext edition, you can be sure the Busoni isn't one. But you can also be sure that you're in the wrong thread too.

Cortot's edition, however, while not quite cutting it by today's Urtext standards, was an attempt to produce "a final text, unimpaired by doubtful traditions and misprints which have been too often superstitiously respected in previous editions".
