VIDEO: Liszt Transcendental Etude No. 10
on: May 05, 2015, 04:04:13 AM

Been working to get this up to speed, and still sound musical. I can finally play it comfortably at a decent pace. Any comments on anything I should improve?

I'm aware I've made some very minor technical mistakes, and that the arpeggios at the end were very sloppy, I don't usually have trouble with those  ::)

Beautiful etude! Despite the technical issues, I loved your perfomance. You played it very convincingly.
I do not feel entitled to give you any advice - there are experts here who may.

You certainly have the measure of this piece, and I applause the hard work that most have gone into getting this far. The conception and flow are convincing, but I think it would be more impressive at a somewhat slower pace that would allow you more accuracy and detail. As it is, you are rather casually hurrying over many passages, creating more than just a few very minor technical issues.
The central forte section IMO needs more weight and grandeur - certainly take the tempo a notch
back there. I though you left out most of those devilish arpeggios near the end. The closing chord
seems much too wimpy - really lean into that.
With more attention to detail (while not losing sight of the big lines) you can really make something out of this.

Thank you very much for your insight, it's very helpful to me. Here's a bit of a slower more thoughtful version:

Do you think this has a better sounding accuracy and detail as you mentioned?

Some parts are indeed better. Other parts sound a bit choppy and diffident. I've never mastered this one anywhere near good so I'm a fine one to advise, but I think you could articulate and shape the RH theme better, and keep in mind that the second time the rhythms is different from the first time (from the accentuato ed appassionato assai). Towards the end of the Stretta, you adopt a different rhythm for the RH octaves. All in all I think this is better, on the right track but not there yet.

Thank your for your kind and constructive criticism. I will continue to work to improve this piece, particular when it comes to the rhythm and accuracy.

I am glad you find my feedback useful. Don't take it for gospel, though ! My concern for accuracy is certainly not shared by everyone.
