When did women stop curtseying?
on: May 18, 2015, 12:32:50 PM
Whenever we watch classical movies and there's a female performer they always do the 'curtsey', the female equivalent of a bow.

I wonder, when did this tradition cease? I notice that I have almost never seen a female performer do this (they instead do the usual 'bow').

Sorry, but I'm a highly sexist dude. It's not that I want women to be 'below' the men, I just want them to be...er...different. Largely because I find them more attractive that way. I can't see how men can be attracted to women if they can't even tell the difference between the two.

Thoughts?

That is a very interesting point. When I think about a woman curtseying -I see a long dress, long hair done in a bun on top of the head - something looking like an XIX or early XX century outfit ;D
I guess it's for its inferior connotations that women stopped doing it.
Yet, I think it looks very graceful and I also like the idea of women being a little different in manner than men. However this approach does not seem very "contemporary". I have a feeling that today the more a woman resembles a man (strong jawline, masculine face, athletic body, etc.) the more attractive she is considered.

Since women (performers, at least) have ceased to do so, and you wish to maintain a difference, perhaps it's time for you to start.

You should be advised before you try, though, that it's not quite as easy as it looks.

I wonder, when did this tradition cease?

A few years back when some bloody Australian refused to bow to our Queen.

I suppose one could equally ask, why have men stopped doffing their hat when greeting a lady and opening doors, etc.    Do men even wear hats these days?

I remember when  I was at school , the headmaster would doff his hat when greeting the students in assembly with a -  good morning boys and girls!   That seems a different era now, sadly.

I would love to wear my sword, but the local constabulary would not like it.

Where I'm at, if it's single edged and you're over 18, it's (albeit very technically) legal to carry anything on you openly (which is defined by a belt clip or holster being visible).

Yes, one needs strong legs...

And, while in your example it's mercifully unclear, a defiance of tradition would seem desirable.

Why should someone have to bow to your queen?

It is a matter of royal protocol and convention.

Curtsying is not, however, required when meeting our Queen, and it is no doubt ours that "some bloody Australian" met. Some poms have difficulty distinguishing between the two.

But the thing is he's Australian so he's not used to bowing down to people.

Well I assume.  I'm not Australian so I wouldn't know.

But anyways I wouldn't bow down for her or anyone else unless they're doing something to further convenience me like coming out to see me play or giving me money or something.  She's a normal person like everyone else.

Hehe I don't know why, but somehow your question made me feel a bit flattered.  ;D I am not, although I begin to wonder what of the Arabs seem so exotic for you.

Doesn't the queen do anything to "further convenience you"? I don't know how that country's system works, but come on. Isn't the queen in charge of the country in any way?

I live in America.

And you don't see anyone bowing down to Obama or anything.

Curtseying is an example of evaluating someone by their adherence to a cultural standard.  We do that a lot in the workplace, especially if there isn't an obvious way to measure performance.

I suspect women today prefer to be evaluated on how well they play piano, and some of the old fashioned charm school stuff has become less important.
