Steinway Grand Piano
on: May 28, 2015, 08:19:28 PM
Hello!

I was recently given a Steinway XR Model M (6'2) from a family member, and I was wondering if someone could tell me someone background of this piano as I am not familiar with it. It is in pretty good condition considering it was built in 1918, but it definitely needs some work. I know that it is an ex-player piano (the system was removed), so I was wondering if it is the same as any other steinway. Any information that you know about these player pianos would be great! Thanks!

It's a real shame that the "player" mechanism was removed.  Those XR pianos were equipped with a Duo-Art player mechanism, which did a remarkable job of reproducing the music -- and in restored condition, an M XR should be close to six figures.

Otherwise it is very similar to a Steinway M, which was and is a very fine grand piano, and well worth restoring or at least working on.

Depending on its condition, it might need minor repairs for under $1000, or it might have to be gutted and fully restored ... costing tens of thousands.  It takes a qualified pro to know. Have a top technician or piano restorer look at the piano.
