Relearning from the beginning - where to start?
on: May 29, 2015, 02:54:47 PM
I've been playing piano for 20 years, since I was 7 years old, but feel like I have little to show for it. Sure, I can read music, but that's about the extent of my abilities. My boyfriend has recently bought me an electric piano in the hopes that I could play freestyle jazz and blues with him (he's a fabulous clarinet player). However, I know nothing of music theory. I'm like to learn the theory and technique behind the music so I can play without needing a concise piece of music in front of me.

There are so many books and resources available (note: I'm a visual learner, I like to be able to study something on paper and apply it...so watching videos isn't going to help me) but I'm not sure where to start. What recommendations can you give for learning key signatures, scales, chords, progressions, etc. and even something to help limber my fingers up again (I've gone quite a few years without playing consistently, so I've lost a lot in that regard).

Physical lessons aren't an option due to my time constraints, but I can self teach if I have something I can study. What are some of the best books/courses available for what I need?

Thanks in advance! ~cheers!
