VIDEO: Piano Sonata Op. 13 by Beethoven
on: May 31, 2015, 08:00:44 PM
Hi Everyone,

This excerpt from Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13, was recorded on the same 1940 N.Y. Steinway D - and with the same pair of [Oktava MK-012] microphones - as was my recording of Franz Liszt's Resignazione and also my recording of the Ervin Nyiregyhazi composition popularly known as "Andante, Ethereal".

I hope that it is enjoyed!

Mvh,
Michael

Bravissimo!

Marvellous performance!!!

Beethoven's genius is highly overrated! What you do, which is completely the opposite of everything that is tasteful and respectful to the composer, is clearly the right way to go! Keep up the slaughtering work. It's clearly very well thought through!

Yeah! That a funny interpretation! Is this you playing?

-Is it  intentional cluster chords or just temporary errors in the left hand? Have you taped the sustaipedal to get that hm...sound?  ;D
I love the your totally rejection of all rythm  ;D

Hi Stevensk,

Yes, it is me playing, and those were unintended errors in the left hand, and in the right hand too and elsewhere in it. ;D

Thanks for listening to the interpretation with the (in some measures) atrociously flawed delivery of the ideas for it!

Michael

So what gave you the idea of changing tempo and completely ignore what he wrote?

Hi Pianoman53,

I make instinctive decisions in my music interpretations.  If it feels good or interesting, I do it.

and can you genuinely say that you're happy with this, and that it's better than what Beethoven wrote?

Hi Pianoman53,

Apart from some wrong notes it isn't any different than what Beethoven wrote.  It is just an interpretation which is different than what you are accustomed to hearing.

It's tremendously different! Rhythm, dynamics tempi... So basically the three fundamental principles of playing.

Hi Pianoman53,

I am not the one who is telling a pianist the style in which that pianist is to play Beethoven's music. ;)

And covered by the Audition Room rules and guidelines:

The performance should reflect a, for the piece in question, reasonable level of musical and technical quality.

Hi Derschoenebahnof,

Apart from some wrong notes it is a very nice recording.  The 1940 N.Y. Steinway D had just been tuned that morning.  We used a matched pair of Oktava MK-012 microphones and a very low noise floor pre-amp.

The only thing that isn't nice about it are some wrong notes.
