relatively advanced early keyboard rep?
on: June 02, 2015, 10:33:33 PM
You might have seen my other post about a final piece to go with my diploma.
Long story short I thought it might be nice to go in the opposite direction and get some early keyboard music at roughly ABRSM diploma level, if such a thing exists.
I'm talking sort of renaissance or before, and there needs to be sheet music that's available to buy.
ANY ideas welcome, thanks

Your are essentially asking for highly developed literature from a period before the musical language and idiom evolved to accommodate the instrument. Music that early is primary modal and polyphonic.
Music of minstrels like for lute was used to support story telling or aided in the emerging dance styles, or you had sacred music for use in various mass and prayer services of the liturgical calendar a d in the daily devotions of monks.
You probably could look at pre Bach ie Kuhnau biblical sontas and similar

Among the 'renaissance' period and the immediate following we find some incredibly immaculate keyboard pieces, primary by Italian and English Masters: Soome examples:
Frescobaldi's Cento Partite, surely among the most magnificent variations of all time: You cand find it on IMSLP or buy them;
Bull's In nomine (in 11/4!), same as above for the score;
Byrd's Walsinghame Variations
The list is enormous, this is only an example
