love his music. complete new discovery for me (came across accidentally when looking for something else).

So I listened to his complete works for solo piano all in one go (today i am looking for the concerto). Really lovely, starting to be a fan.

Anyone else? thoughts on the music, have you played it? Do you like playing it (there are some composers i enjoy listening to more than playing, i e Brahms is most difficult due to the 'symphonic' style writing he employs, really awkward, to good effect but i have to really dig the piece to put in the extra effort, takes me forever to learn it).
toccata is my favorite label esp w their commitment on doing first ever records of works.
from their album description
London-born William Yeates Hurlstone was only 30 when he died, in May 1906, and yet the music he was able to compose during his short life shows remarkable accomplishment. This CD presents the first-ever recording of his complete piano music, which develops from confident childhood essays, takes on board the influences of Chopin and Brahms, and matures into an assured and natural style balancing lyricism and drama.

*so many of these flashes of genius burned so bright and died so young  :'(

IE

^^Really hear some Brahmsian elements here but not quite developed to the extent of Richard Strauss. lovely though, but it sounds difficult exactly in the way Brahms and company give me trouble with.

complete works playlist here:

Never heard of him. And never heard him - a situation not easily remediable as I only get "This video is not available" for all of them on the playlist.

I have played the piano concerto and it is completely divine. Not a virtuoso work, but lush orchestration throughout.

If there is a better concerto by an English composer, i have yet to hear it.

To add to the regional blocking annoyance, it turns out (Dr) Kenji Fujimura is a lecturer here in Melbourne!

Hi Visitor,

I've never quite understand this because copyright is international.  Licensing can be regional, so maybe licensing is what it is about?

Hi ms yes prob and most likely or quirky combo of the two and perhaps some thing we didn't consider

It works both ways too. Yt.blocks some things for me too

And oaying does not fix because I hve a premium musi recordings database subscription that gives me access to thousands of albums and tracks and even there especially w some "historical" recordings of famous pianists it will block me and say not avail in my country which points more to license as w copyright I have paid to legally access and still blocks because I believe someone else owns the license rights or something strange

Hi Visitor,

The next time I upload a video to YouTube I'll check and see if I am right in remembering that there is an option to limit viewability to four or five regions or even to specific nations.

Just listened to the disc. Some of the pieces are rather simple but still very charming - played really well too! I have been trying to find sheet music, but then I read the review at Musicweb:
https://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2015/May/Hurlstone_piano_TOCC0289.htm

Looks like most pieces haven't been published... :(

the music is superb.

probably with some cajoling, the royal college of music might work with you to help you  get images or to have appt to view some manuscripts.

more practically, a few were published, i have the cappriccio and op. 8 miniatures, so kicking over a few rocks has yielded a few gems.

*pls do not pm me to share personally or on here though as I do not have permission to re distribute the works i have given that I do not remember how/from whom I acquired them. But some careful googling may yield results for anyone interested

The Royal College of Music are/were extremely helpful in providing copies of Hurlstone's Manuscripts, albeit it takes a little time and is not cheap.

I played the accompaniment of his bassoon sonata many years ago. It's charming piece, very English, and very enjoyable to play. I think I might have a listen to some of his other works today! Thanks for the suggestion.
