Scriabin making pianos
on: June 12, 2015, 10:10:56 AM
The Wikipedia article on Scriabin is interesing, but includes an odd throwaway line: "He sometimes gave away pianos he had built to house guests." See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Scriabin#Childhood_and_education_.281872.E2.80.931893.29

This appears to be in his childhood: I can just about imagine a young, single-handed person making a violin, but "making" a piano sounds near-impossible. Does anyone know any more about this, or can explain if/how it is some sort of misunderstanding?

Yeah, I always thought that was weird. Definitely a misunderstanding. Only believable if it were cardboard/paper mache pianos.

I've read the biogaphy of his life, by Faubion Bowers, many years ago. That can't be accurate and doesn't seem  to fit into the general picture in a general sense either.
Beethoven-Alkan, concerto 3
Faure barcarolle 10
Mozart-Stradal, symphony 40

If he built pianos to house guests, then those pianos would have to be quite large.

That must take time to build. Now I understand why his pieces are so short  :P

I think that maybe he constructed the "Mega Imperial Bösendorfer" with tones so low in pitch that you only can feel them.  Unfortunately the instrument now is lost to history, so to speak.
