Can someone tell me what's going on?
on: December 16, 2004, 05:45:42 AM
First we have a cooking utensil going on self imposed exile. Then we have a whole crop of new people posting here who seem to all know each other.

So, do you new guys play the piano?

Oh yeah, and welcome.

There are a lot of us new refugees from less hospitable parts of the internet universe, myself included.  We'll blend in soon enough.  (I hope. I promise you only the good people refugeed.  :P)  Pleased to meet you and pleased to see some old familiar faces who've kept their sanctuary over here quite a secret. ;)

Oh--and I do play the piano!  Actually, I live for it.

I play.  I took lessons growing up, then moved away from the piano. (literally)  When I was settled again, after a zillion years of school,  I made my way through a couple of old uprights.  Recently (as in about four years ago) we managed a nice grand.  So I'm serious about music again, and one of my kids is learning as well.

I wish I could make on of those chat sessions, but I never seem to be free.

I think the reason for the recent influx of newbie adult refugees 8) is that some of Bernhard's amazing posts were quoted on the Piano World forum.  That man shines like a beacon on the internet! :)

Bernhard is a teacher who posts here. He gives one or two lessons when he's not blowing out the bandwidth here. Some of what he says actually makes sense - i'm kidding Bernhard.

As far as you newcomers, and I hope I'm not breaching confidentiality but:

athykay, you're an obvious anagram from the other place.

Alice Oliver,  i recognize your lower case style anywhere.

Chickering9 - well that's obvious.

Oh yeah, and tell Jack Appleseed I've got his number - you're closest ath.

THis is all in jest of course :)

hmoll, you are good!  Now see if you can figure out who I am....?  ::)

I've played piano nearly all my life... started when I was about 6 and my older sister was taking lessons.  No way was she going to be doing anything that I wasn't doing!  So I grabbed up her lesson books (Schuam, IIRC) and taught myself to play.  Made my sister so mad that she quit lessons.  I was pretty much self-taught up until college when I started taking "real" lessons.  I'm currently studying with a really fantastic teacher who is providing me all sorts of tips 'n tricks on accompaniment.  Handy, since I accompany 4 choirs and have my last holiday "gig" this afternoon!  Whoopee!

Should we know who you are, from Over There?

Well it has to be a Coffee Room person because I don't post in the Piano threads and it has to be someone who is NOT a Leberal Refugee or he/she would have known what was going on.

Welcome Torvald.
Don't worry. They seem to know each other, and can't decide whether they know me or not. I'm not telling.

My family came from Norway. My grandfather was shipwrecked on the SS Norge when he came to the US. We have a friend named Per who lives in Norway who wrote a book about that shipwreck, as well as one about the Norwegian passengers on the Titanic.

And that's another thing I especially wanted to say.  You've built up a wonderful community with the help of Nils, your llght-handed moderator.

We would feel awful if any "oldies" feel squeezed out.  It may seem kind of  overwhelming at first, but there aren't really so many of us - at most a dozen at present.  You'll get to know us....and vice versa.  Perhaps we'll post a  brief cast of characters!

They're all the cream of another forum, where we felt uncomfortable because of the unpleasant  level of discourse.  And with one or two exceptions (I'm one - what no embarrassed smilie?), they're all very serious pianists and piano lovers with a lot to contribute.

(I got involved Over There while hunting for a piano for  my pianist son, and we made friends in the OT discussion forum)

Tash - nobody - please don't go.  This is YOUR home! :'(

Thank you for the kind welcome Hmoll. We hear the story of the wreck of Norge in school. It was a terrible accident. I am happy your family survive. Please everyone tell me when my English writing is poor. I think to use this forum to improve my ability to write English. I know I have a problem with the verbs to make them accord with the subject. I use the Norsk-English dictionary to find words but maybe I choose the wrong ones.

Your English is not bad at all. Since you asked, in all due respect:
