I adore neglected music so I've been on a spree of uploading many obscure works.

I'm sure you'll find what you like in that selection! The Russians have a different style of beauty from the French, and then there's Bridge and Palmgren who are overall just fantastic composers who deserves much more love.

Greatly appreciated posts medtnaculus!

You've posted a wealth of interesting music on your youtube channel, I hope they stay up, just beware of using recordings from companies who are very anti-copyright vigilant such as Hyperion etc. I've seen too many awesome score videos be taken down for this reason.

It's not just record companies - that would be the case only with recordings issued commercially by such companies - but in any case there's more than one copyright to be considered here; in fact, there are usually four - those of the record company (where there is one), the publisher (where there is one), the performer and the composer. In the case of record companies and publishers, it is always possible to request their permission (provided that they're still in existence), in that of the performer/s it's also sometimes possible and in the case of the composer it's safest to adhere to the 70 year rule, under which, of the composers posted above, Bridge and Blumenfeld are in the public domain.

This can often be a problem because of the conflict of interest between the need to preserve legitimate copyright and the desire to share worthwhile performances of worthwhile music, epsecially that which is under-represented and otherwise unavailable or hard to source.

Record companies invest their money in making recordings, so anything that might risk compromising their subsequent income from them is likely to persuade them to be vigilant; much the same goes for publishers, especially in cases where their scores are included with uploaded recordings. With the performers, it's rather more limited to a matter of courtesy, as most would not likely sustain noticeable financial loss just because someone's uploaded their performances. As to the composer, whilst many who are alive would likely welcome the exposure provided by such uploads, most cannot afford for their royalties to be compromised and many composers depend heavily upon those as a vital income source - not all composers can live on commissions alone!

The best way to try to address and overcome these issues is to ask permission first wherever possible.

Best,

Thank you Opus for the kind response! I try to be as careful as possible (avoiding labels such as Timpani and Hyperion), but in the end there's only so much I can do. My main hope is to spread the love for performers who have the courage to explore unknown works and composers who deserve to receive some more much needed attention.

I do hope that most performers don't mind the posting of their recordings, but if they request their removal I'll happily oblige. While it does grant some exposure to a certain extent, I do understand there comes a point when uploading their work negates the need to actually purchase recordings. Though, in a sense, it's far better than Spotify in regards to payout to the label/artist.

If you ever have some works you'd like to see uploaded with audio and sheet music just shoot me a message!

Alistair - I understand and respect both sides of the argument.

Online piracy is a very interesting debating point - one thing that I think could be an ideal balance would be to offer lesser quality recordings(lower bitrate) and/or truncated samples(at full quality) for FREE to expose the music to all and to offer a premium quality full recording to those willing to purchase.

Medtnaculus - I shall shoot you a message if I think of something that may be a good idea! In the meantime the first thing that springs to mind in the Medtner G minor sonata which is the most popular work of his that has not seen a score-video rendering.

My favourite recording is the Moiseiwitsch though quite a few are awesome also.

The A minor (war) sonata is another I love - it seems to be one of his most underrated.

By the way - The Benjamin Dale Sonata in D minor is one of the loveliest sonatas ever written in my opinion, it would be awesome if more people heard it.

I know this is a bit late but my personal favourite lesser know lyrical piano music are the Pleiades Dances by Takashi Yoshimatsu. There a nine suites in total, each with seven pieces.

Here are suites I-V:

Not sure about the first of your three suggestions but I'm all in favour of the other two, of which the first provides opportunities for the whetting of the appetite and might encourage some people to go and buy CDs that they might not otherwise have known about.

On of the most beautiful pieces I heard in a long time, shame it is unknown as most from Blumenfeld

Lovely prelude

This one is beautiful as well

I also love preludes 4, 11,14 (reminds me a Chopins C minor one, but actually I like this one more)

Then I think Bortkiewicz is pretty great unknown composer too..

While Borodin is quite well known this piano music is not so much and I think it is absolutely amazing stuff, his melodies and strong russian feeling is just fabulous, I especially love the first 3 and the Nocturno

In progress:
Scriabin: Preludes op 11 nr 6, 10, 17, 1
Rachmaninov: Prelude C# minor
Fibich: Poeme
Mussorgsky: Pictures at Exhibition Promenade, gnome
