Other pieces like Chopin 48-1?
on: July 06, 2015, 06:16:19 PM
Hey all - first post here.

I have recently gotten myself back into regular practicing after ~10yrs off. I have undertaken this piece to really get the sparks flying again, and after about 6 weeks of daily, near-obsessive study and practice, I've gotten it to a point where, while it pales in comparison to my favorite interpretations of the piece, I'm at least able to be proud of the fact that it's not too difficult for me to play (which I thought might be the case the first time I tried that doppio movimento section!)

Difficulty aside, I'm looking for suggestions for other pieces that you all find have a similar mood - funereal, overwrought with despair, beautifully and wildly pained. I have played many other Chopin Nocturnes and this one stands out to me not only technically, but in the intensity of its emotion. I am trying to assemble a few other comparatively devastating pieces for a project. All suggestions welcome - thank you :)

lots and lots to choose from. i worked on this and found it to be full of pain (nostalgic at first, then full of pathos and anger = ala anger at loss = int he be section). A sections plays is Chopin, the B section more akin to Rachmaninoff.  Not too difficult w/ careful practice, only took me a few months to get the mechanics sorted out, but i still dabble w/ it and find new places to really pull at those heart strings. there is despair, joy, sadness, rage, in here

My suggestions:
-Anything in c minor
-Chopin Sonata Op.35
-Mozart K 310
-Chopin Prelude Op.45
-Chopin Prelude Op.28 No.9
-Chopin Prelude Op.28 No.24
-Chopin Funeral March Op.72 No.2
-Beethoven Sonata Op.26 3rd Movement
-Beethoven Sonata Op.10 No.3 2nd Movement

And the obivous one:
-Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
I made an account and hadn't used it in a year. Welcome back, kevon.

A few years ago, I thought this piece was really overrated (well, the melody at least). But now that I've matured (I hope ;D), I really like it. Not for its melody, but for the emotions.

Yes, the main attraction to the Apres un Reve to me is the conservative movement of the accompaniment supporting the melody. Really makes the melody appear stronger, and still pulls at the heartstrings. I forgot about this piece. Maybe I will work on a solo arrangement of this!

Have you had a look at some of the other Chopin nocturnes, specifically 48-2? It has many of the same qualities that it's C minor brother has, you may enjoy it a lot (and then you have the entire opus done, which makes for a nice bit of repertoire).

John Field(inventor of the nocturne form) made a c sharp minor nocturne which is very similar to Chopin's op.48 no.1
The piano a string instrument controlled by means of percussion.
