Sorry, forgot this question. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of some excellent music for an eight year old beginner (about four months) who tells me he likes mozart, bach, and beethoven and wants to play pieces by them. This kid is truly amazing, and just wants to learn and know everything. He even pulls out his brother's copy of fur elise and tries to play some of it. So if anyone has any suggestions on pieces please tell me. He is *still* in bastien level one only because I didn't want to rush and overwhelm him and also, I don't want his parents spending tons on money because he has an older brother who's taking lessons also. He could defintely be in level two and that's where I'll put him in a few weeks if I keep him with a method series and with bastien. Also, if you have any suggestions for a method series for a student such as this, that will be welcome also. Thanks.

If you want specifically Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, you can start with those:

1.   Bach – The Little book of Anna Magdalena Bach of 1725 (ABRSM) – the 25 pieces in there are not really by Bach, but rather instructional pieces that Anna collected for her own instruction and the children.

2.   Bach – 18 Little preludes (Easier Piano Pieces no. 18 – ABRSM). Most of the pieces here are by Bach, but some are by his sons. They were used for the instruction of his children.

3.   Beethoven – A book of dances (Easier Piano Pieces no. 20)- Particularly delightful are the Six Ecossaises (to be played as a set) WoO 83 – they sound immeasurably more difficult than they actually are (Kissin plays them as encore).

4.   Mozart – The Nannerl notebook – Compiled by his father, Leopold this is a bit like the Little Notebook of A. M. Bach. There are sixty or so pieces from contemporary composers (most of them anonymous) and Leopold used it to teach Nanerl (Mozart’s sister the piano). Soon, Mozart was doing it as well, and the last 20 pieces or so are his own compositions (aged 4 –6).

5.   Mozart – 25 Early Pieces (Easier Piano Pieces no. 67) – Mozart’s first compositions, between the ages of 5 and 9.

Lucky you, these kinds of students are a blast. I have three such students. I have had good luck with teaching them pieces by wrote while using the lesson books. By the time they have memorised say, Fur Elise, and Minuet by Bach, Solfeggietto, they can begin to read them. There are certain students - I was one of them as a kid - who are ready to play pieces far beyond what they can read. I am not a believer in a sequential process as the only way to learn. If a student is hungry for music - give it to them. Also, don't be shy about asking people to pay for lessons ever. That is their choice to make. What you are offering has value and as such they can find a way to pay you for their son. I have seen people over and over "afford" whatever they found important enough. I don't want a book-length post here, but it has been a disaster whenever I have tried to give anything free or cheaper. The respect and value of what is offered just isn't there and so the relationship falls apart.

The Suzuki books have some great repertoire. They are especially nice for beginners because they have works by a variety of classical composers all in one book and they are relatively inexpensive - $6.95 (USD). Here is the table of contents from Book Two:
