Haydn and CPE Bach's Keyboard Sonatas
on: December 17, 2004, 07:29:16 PM
I'm curious for knowing the keyboard sonatas of these composers, looking for some gems which I could learn to play myself. But before investing a lot in recordings containing the complete cycles, as usually I do, I'd like to be sure if such works are worth of the effort. Indeed they don't seem much known, neither found often in the recital repertory.
Brief musical comments about the considered best works would be a good starting point, though the ideal would be such a precious guide as Prof. Bernhard's one, about the Scarlatti's Sonatas, in this same site.
Many thanks in advance.

Haydn's last piano sonatas are wounderful!
Especially the two in Eb major (Hob. XVI-49 & Hob. XVI-52).
I'd recommend Glenn Gould interpretation. He's great.

I don't know much about CPE Bach's sonatas. Interesting though, I'll check this out.
Too bad schubert didn't write any piano concertos...

What do you mean they aren't much known?  Well, admittedly, I don't know much about CPE Bach, but Haydn's sonatas are quite well known.

I agree with zemos - the late sonatas of Haydn are particularly good.  I have a recording of Richter playing the Hob XVI 52 in E flat major, which is fantastic.  This one's fun to play too!

(All Haydn sonatas are graded)

(favourite Haydn sonatas)

C. P. E. Bach pretty much invented the classical sonata (and sonata form) and was a huge influence on Mozart. Almost forgotten these days and almost never played, his sonatas are real gems. All of the sonatas are around grade 7-8. I particularly like w62 in G.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.
